The unique sub-tropical climate that rules our island makes it the perfect home to a wide variety of great game fish such as Snook, Tarpon, Redfish, Cobia, Permit and many more.
As with any outdoor sport, each season has its peak when that particular pursuit is at its annual best. When you are speaking about snook and tarpon fishing in our area, the seasonal best is spring and early summer when the warming water brings these fantastic sportfish to an explosive good time.
Snook can be caught in the shallow waters of the backcountry islands as well as along the beaches and near docks and bridges. Tarpon prefer to stay a little farther from the edges of the mangrove islands and beaches than the snook but are still very accessible to anglers. Area guides specialize in styles of fishing that allow even inexperienced anglers to achieve world class success when fishing for these great sport fish. The live bait / light tackle style of fishing developed here allows everyone from young kids to grownups to catch fish and enjoy a great day in the boat. How can I be so sure that it is indeed for everyone? I was a guide here full time for over a decade, and now I enjoy working on the island and taking time to fish with family and friends.
If you would like to try your luck on your own, good fishing can often be found along the edges of the beach. Fishing from shore with light spinning rods can produce all kinds of fishy encounters. Armed with shrimp or small jigs for bait, you could encounter snook, redfish, trout, flounder, pompano or a host of other fish right from the shore. On the bay side of the island, the fishing from your dock could be equally as rewarding, particularly at night.
